New Norfolk-Richmond-Washington rail service to begin by year’s end

South Hampton Roads will have passenger rail service to Richmond, and on to Washington and the Northeast Corridor, no later than Dec. 31, almost a year earlier than planned.

Operated by Amtrak, the service will provide one round-trip daily between Norfolk and Washington: a morning departure from the new Harbor Park station in Norfolk and an afternoon departure from Union Station in the nation’s capital.

“This service will provide immediate relief to road-weary travelers between two of the state’s most congested regions,” Gov. Bob McDonnell said in a statement Wednesday.

The governor’s education plan for Virginia

McDonnell’s reading proficiency plan is important step

Virginia Gov. Robert F. McDonnell (R) has proposed that no elementary school student be promoted beyond third grade without knowing how to read, and he’s prepared to offer financial incentives to students who learn.

“This is critically important,” McDonnell said in a news release announcing his $438 million education plan. “If we promote young folks from third to fourth and fourth to fifth grades and do not make sure they can read with a great degree of proficiency we’re doing those young folks a great disservice.”

UPDATE: Amazon to open two local distribution centers, creating 1,350 jobs

Online giant Amazon.com Inc. is planning to open two distribution centers in the Richmond area next fall that would employ a total of 1,350 people, state and local officials announced this morning.

The $135 million investment in Chesterfield and Dinwiddie counties is Virginia’s largest single economic development deal since 2004 in terms of jobs created.

In announcing the project, Gov. Bob McDonnell called the investment “a tremendous win for the Greater Richmond region.”

Virginia Seasonally Adjusted Unemployment Rate Decreased 0.2

Virginia’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate decreased 0.2 percentage point this
month to 6.2 percent, the second consecutive monthly decline, and was 0.4 percentage point below the yearago November rate of 6.6 percent. The unemployment rate fell because the number of unemployed
decreased by 8,331 while the labor force increased by 7,610, as an additional 15,941 people reported that
they were working. Virginia’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate continues below the national rate,
which fell 0.4 percentage point in November to 8.6 percent.

Gov. wants to make college more affordable for VA students

Governor Bob McDonnell unveiled a proposal Wednesday he said will help lower the costs of going to college in Virginia.

The governor says increasing higher education funding is one of the biggest goals for his administration.

McDonnell said a group of key state lawmakers in both houses worked together on the plan in order to reduce the debt burden for college students trying to survive in a tight economy
