What the Press says about Bob McDonnell’s Bi-Partisan Record

*    "Republicans are right to put their hopes in McDonnell, whose conservative credentials paired with his streak of practicality have served him well over a long and productive public life."
Editorial, Virginian-Pilot, March 26, 2008

*    "After years of shrugging off the problem, the General Assembly finally addressed it last month, thanks to the bipartisan efforts of Gov. Timothy M. Kaine, a Democrat, and Attorney General Robert F. McDonnell, a Republican. With scarcely a murmur of opposition, lawmakers approved a measure to raise the caps for court-appointed lawyers handling adult felony cases—and, far more significantly, to allow the caps to be waived with judicial approval. As Mr. McDonnell pointed out, any justice system will not work unless both sides of a criminal case are represented by competent, fairly compensated attorneys. Until now too many defendants in Virginia were denied that basic right. Now, at least, there is the real prospect of a fix."

Editorial, The Washington Post, March 5, 2007

*    "McDonnell has worked effectively with Democratic Gov. Tim Kaine and, in his previous tour as a Virginia Beach delegate, showed a talent for assembling bipartisan coalitions to tackle transportation and law enforcement issues"

Editorial, The Virginian-Pilot, March 26, 2008

*    "When George Allen mounted the platform on election night, Virginians saw him surrounded by a sea of the Commonwealth’s Republican elite- minus one. After it became obvious that the results might be headed for a recount, Virginia Attorney General Bob McDonnell decided a partisan appearance with Allen would be inappropriate. Part of his responsibility as Virginia’s top lawyer includes representing the State Board of Elections, which would have overseen a retabulation (that became unnecessary after Allen’s gracious concession speech). McDonnell chose not to compromise his official duties by joining a partisan presentation before a bank of national media cameras. In the words of the attorney general’s spokesman, Tucker Martin, McDonnell felt it necessary to remove his "political hat."

By taking the stance that he did, McDonnell acknowledged his role is to the serve the citizens of the Commonwealth- not a single political party. The attorney general set an example that other elected officials would do well to follow."
Editorial, Richmond Times-Dispatch, November 12, 2006

*    "Attorney General Bob McDonnell has set up a task force to rid state government of outdated regulations. He brings a long-overdue and welcome comb to a tangled administrative system….When making his announcement, McDonnell noted, "Regulations are a hidden tax."  He is right. The system needs an overhaul, and McDonnell deserves plaudits for launching a crusade that will do more good for the state than for his own political resume. The Republican attorney general also has earned praise for not turning this effort into a partisan hack job- which ultimately would have doomed its success. McDonnell included members of the Kaine administration on the task force, in addition to lawmakers from both political parties.
Editorial, Richmond Times-Dispatch, August 13, 2006

*    "This week Virginia political leaders came together. Governor Tim Kaine signed a series of bills passed by the General Assembly that improve the monitoring of sex offenders and toughen laws against abuse. Attorney General Bob McDonnell promoted the legislation….Monday’s signing ceremony shows what can be done when politicians cast aside partisanship and institutional jealousies."
"Common Purpose" Richmond Times-Dispatch, April 27, 2006

*    "As a seven-term legislator, McDonnell grew a reputation for wading into tough policy issues and helping forge solutions."
"McDonnell Weighs in, From a Distance" Margaret Edds, The Virginian-Pilot, February 4, 2007

*    "Mr. McDonnell’s tenure as attorney general, by most accounts, has been professional and not overtly ideological."
"It’s Virginia’s Race" The Washington Post, June 11, 2009

*    "McDonnell’s resume offers evidence of a genuine desire to be a problem-solver."
Virginian-Pilot Editorial. June 3, 2009
