Statement of Bob McDonnell on Election of Teresa Sullivan as President of The University of Virginia
VIRGINIA BEACH- Virginia Governor-elect Bob McDonnell issued the following statement today following the election of University of Michigan Provost Teresa Sullivan as the next President of The University of Virginia:
“Mr. Jefferson’s University has occupied a seminal place in the academic and public life of our nation since its founding in 1819. The Presidency of the University of Virginia is rightly regarded as one of the most highly esteemed positions in higher education. Teresa Sullivan is an excellent choice to assume this prominent post, and I know she will do great things for the University and our Commonwealth. I welcome her to Virginia, applaud her historic achievement as the first female President of the University, and look forward to serving with her on behalf of the citizens of Virginia in the years ahead.
I also want to again commend John Casteen for his tireless service as President of the University over the last 20 years. John leaves behind a University that is thriving, vigorous, dynamic and well-positioned for even greater future success. I know it will be a smooth transition and I wish President Casteen well in his future endeavors.”
