FACT CHECK: Deeds’ Divisive, Negative, False Attack Ad

Deeds’ Divisive, Negative, False Attack Ad

In Creigh Deeds’ latest attack ad he makes the following erroneous claims:

Claim: “Bob McDonnell introduced 35 bills to restrict a women’s right to choose.”

WRONG

The Facts: As a delegate, Bob McDonnell was chief patron of 386 pieces of legislation. 8 dealt with abortion (5 were Same Bill). The breakdown:

Public Safety - 51.03% (197 bills)

Economy, Healthcare and Transportation - 19.68% (76 bills)

Miscellaneous - 13.47% (52 bills)

Justice - 11.11% (43 bills)

Child Support - 2.59% (10 bills)

Abortion - 2.07% (8 bills)

Claim: “He wants to outlaw abortion—even in cases of rape and incest.”

WRONG

The Facts: Bob McDonnell is pro-life, based on his Catholic faith. Established Supreme Court rulings make the Deeds’ claim a constitutional impossibility. As governor Bob McDonnell will uphold all federal and state laws on the issue. On the issue of abortion, Creigh Deeds’ is far out of the mainstream with his constant opposition to common sense bipartisan legislative measures such as a ban on partial birth abortion, parental consent for abortions for children, and informed consent to allow women more information prior to the procedure.

“He (McDonnell) said that he would “uphold the laws of the land” on the issue but that his position is clear: “I have been a pro-life legislator. I have been a pro-life attorney general.” (The Washington Post, August 9, 2009)

Claim: “And McDonnell opposed birth control for married adults.”

WRONG

The Facts: Bob McDonnell has NEVER opposed birth control for married adults.

McDonnell press answer August 30, 2009: “I have my personal views based on my Catholic faith. However, from a policy standpoint, government should not ban contraception. As Governor I will do nothing to ban the sale of contraceptives.”
