Daily Press Endorses Bob McDonnell for Governor
Paper Endorsed Tim Kaine in 2005
NEWPORT NEWS- The Daily Press today endorsed Bob McDonnell, Republican gubernatorial nominee and former Attorney General of Virginia, in the 2009 campaign for governor. The paper endorsed Democrat Tim Kaine in the 2005 race. The Daily Press serves over 400,000 readers in the Hampton Roads region.
In the endorsement editorial, headlined:“Budget Discipline and Executive Experience Make Bob McDonnell the Right Choice in Difficult Times”, the paper writes:
“McDonnell will bring executive experience in business and the military and management experience in state government, gained as attorney general. That’s an advantage over Democratic candidate Creigh Deeds, a state senator and former commonwealth’s attorney from rural Bath County.
Under other circumstances, the earnest and moderate Deeds might make a good governor. But with tax revenues falling, new Medicaid mandates looming, and individuals and businesses under financial stress, Virginia needs a disciplined hand at budget control. That advantage goes again clearly to McDonnell. When facing problems, he is less likely than Deeds to turn first to state intervention and state spending.”
