New Norfolk-Richmond-Washington rail service to begin by year’s end

South Hampton Roads will have passenger rail service to Richmond, and on to Washington and the Northeast Corridor, no later than Dec. 31, almost a year earlier than planned.

Operated by Amtrak, the service will provide one round-trip daily between Norfolk and Washington: a morning departure from the new Harbor Park station in Norfolk and an afternoon departure from Union Station in the nation’s capital.

“This service will provide immediate relief to road-weary travelers between two of the state’s most congested regions,” Gov. Bob McDonnell said in a statement Wednesday.

The governor’s education plan for Virginia

VIRGINIA GOV. Robert F. McDonnell (R) began the second half of his term outlining an expansive agenda to remake public education. He is on solid ground in wanting to give parents more choices, improve teacher quality and keep students in school longer. His willingness to take on entrenched interests should be applauded and, we hope, followed by the General Assembly when it considers the proposed legislation.
