EDITORIAL: Virginia beats Maryland

When it comes to encouraging prosperity, the Old Dominion is trouncing the Old Line State. The American Legislative Exchange Council this week released a “Rich States, Poor States” report that modeled the 50 states and ranked the economic outlook in each. Virginia secured a third-place slot while neighboring Maryland lagged midpack at 21. That’s no accident.

GOP Governors Are Showing the Way

Democrats say otherwise, but Republican governors and their records will be a major asset to the GOP in 2012. New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie’s monumental achievement this week in passing a bill to reform his state’s public-employee benefits is a prime example. As Gov. Christie said Friday, underfunded pension and health-care obligations are “the core problems of government spending in the country.”

On D-Day anniversary, McDonnell thanks WWII veterans

Gov. Bob McDonnell stood before men tested and worn by years of war, and thanked them for their service as young troops fanned across the globe.

And yet as McDonnell toured the Sitter & Barfoot Veterans Care Center in Richmond on Monday, the 67th anniversary of the D-Day invasion, the residents showered him with thanks.

“It shows appreciation for what we had to do,” said Charles Garnett, 87, who served in the Army during World War II. “We really didn’t want to at the time. But we did, and we did it because we were asked to do it.”

“We all made the best of it. We had no choice at the time. You had to fight for your country. And we’re not going to give this country up too easily to anybody. Old as we are, we’re still ready to fight if we have to.”

RC Poll: Citizen Views of Taxes, Energy, the Environment and possible Allen-Kaine campaign

Perceptions of the Commonwealth have improved since the December poll, with almost half (49%) saying that things in Virginia are going in the right direction and 36 percent saying things are on the wrong track. (December results were 45 percent right direction and 43 percent wrong track.) At the same time, Governor Bob McDonnell’s approval rating is now 66 percent, up from 57 percent in December.

McDonnell Correctly Vetoes PBS Funding

Virginia Governor Bob McDonnell has used his line-item veto authority to strike $424,000 in taxpayer funding for public broadcasting. McDonnell had previously sought to reduce the spending twice, but the legislature approved the funds over his objections. The veto cannot be overridden.

McDonnell heading to “Meet the Press” Sunday

Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell, who has made the rounds recently on cable television, will make his next appearance on NBC’s “Meet the Press” on Sunday. McDonnell is scheduled to appear with David Axelrod, an advisor to President Barack Obama who has left for Chicago to work on the president’s 2012 re-election campaign, and New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg, to talk about the 2012 presidental race and the economy.
