No longer will Old Dominion scribes and chatterboxes be forced to focus on such mundane matters as budget shortfalls, transportation plans, job creation, and education funding.

McDonnell talks jobs and economy in Chesterfield

While most people were still getting ready for work, Bob McDonnell stood in front of a coffee-sipping crowd and talked up his jobs and economy campaign focus today.  The Republican gubernatorial nominee spoke about promoting free enterprise, streamlining business permitting and making Virginia friendly for films, retirees and the military.

McDonnell promises to fight legislation that helps unions organize

Republican gubernatorial candidate Bob McDonnell said today that if elected governor, he’d use the powers available to him to fight so-called card check legislation, which would help unions organize by foregoing a secret ballot.  “I’ll use every resource of my office to speak out strongly on behalf of the business community, and against card check,” McDonnell said on a conference call with the Virginia Manufacturers Association and a couple of business owners opposed to the legislation.

VA Gov Poll: McDonnell +9

Despite starting the week on tough ground after the Washington Post dug up a socially conservative policy thesis he wrote 20 years ago, Bob McDonnell is so far maintaining his lead over Democrat Creigh Deeds in the race for governor of Virginia.  A Rasmussen survey released today found McDonnell leading by 9 points (Sept. 1, 500 LV, MoE +/- 4.5%), nearly the same as last month.

McDonnell Releases Virginia Education Funding Plan

Republican gubernatorial candidate Bob McDonnell said Tuesday that Virginia can redirect an additional $480 million a year to school classrooms by cutting back on administrative spending. McDonnell released a proposal Tuesday to cut administrative education spending and increase classroom spending. Under the plan, classroom spending would increase from 61 percent of all education dollars to 65 percent by the end of his four-year term.

McDonnell stumps at Falmouth headquarters

Republican gubernatorial candidate Bob McDonnell got a commuter’s tour of the Fredericksburg area yesterday, including a stop at the Falmouth intersection.  After a stop in Alexandria, McDonnell’s campaign RV drove south on Interstate 95 at rush hour to visit volunteers at Stafford County Republican Headquarters, perched on the corner where U.S. 1, Butler and Warrenton roads intersect.

Time for Virginia to Drill, Baby, Drill

The ongoing economic crisis has states scrambling for new sources of revenue to fill the holes in their annual budgets. Spending cuts, while popular in the abstract, are almost always unpopular among the constituents and interests groups whose spending it is that is being cut. Many state legislators are equally unwilling to propose tax increases, especially in recessionary times.
