Thank a Veteran Today

Today we thank the veterans who have bravely served to keep us free, and the active duty service members who are continuing that tradition of sacrifice and service all across the globe.

Maureen and I just got back from serving meals to wounded soldiers and their families at The Fisher House in Richmond. This remarkable home is the result of the personal philanthropy of Zachary and Elizabeth Fisher of New York, and they have built similar homes on the grounds of military and VA medical centers all over. These homes allow families struggling through the tragedy of injury to their loved one to be close by in the toughest of times, providing the love and support our heroes need to heal and recover. It was a visit that touched us both.

Military service runs deep in our families, and, as many of you know, we’ve lost two very special veterans recently, our fathers, Frank Gardner and Jack McDonnell. They were both members of the “Greatest Generation” who served bravely in the Second World War. It meant a tremendous amount to be able to visit with the members of today’s “Greatest Generation”, the remarkable young men and women who are demonstrating, in their determination and resolve, the unyielding courage and character of America.

And my official Veterans Day statement is here: http://www.governor.virginia.gov/news/viewRelease.cfm?id=464

Wherever you are today, please, stop and thank a veteran or an active duty service member. We must never forget: Freedom is Not Free.

Sincerely,

Bob McDonnell
