As the former Board of Supervisors Chairman in Prince William County, I can think of no one better than Bob McDonnell to be leading our ticket this fall. I’ve known Bob since he served in the House of Delegates and know his commitment to addressing the challenges we face in Northern Virginia. Bob has a plan to improve Virginia’s economy, schools, and transportation system.
All Virginians should unite behind Bob’s candidacy and support his campaign. It’s critical that we have a proven leader in Richmond during these challenging times.
I had the privilege of serving with Bob McDonnell in the House of Delegates for three years prior to his election as our Attorney General in 2005. During that time, I watched him as the Chairman of the Courts of Justice Committee and as an assistant floor leader for the House GOP majority. I learned a great deal about how a conservative leader can successfully pursue a positive agenda despite opposition from liberal obstructionists in the Senate and in the Governor’s office. Bob McDonnell accomplished this by effectively communicating a positive message of reform, by engaging opponents and persuading them of the merits of various portions of his agenda, and by building a consensus around those portions to overcome any remaining opposition and achieve his core policy goals, all without abandoning his conservative principles.
After his election as Attorney General, I was honored to be appointed by the Speaker to replace him on the Courts of Justice Committee in 2006. I have also had the honor of carrying and successfully passing a portion of his legislative agenda during each year of his four-year term as Attorney General, including a bill to address identity theft in 2006, elder abuse in 2007, trademark infringement in 2008, and gang violence in 2009. Each time, I have reflected on and used the lessons I learned from watching Bob McDonnell achieve his conservative policy goals through consensus-building and the power of persuasion. As House Chairman of the Conservative Caucus, I know that Bob McDonnell will use these skills as Governor to build a record of accomplishment that we can be proud of, both as conservatives and as Virginians.

“Today we remember the tragedy at Virginia Tech. We remember those we lost, those who were injured, and all those who were touched by one of the darkest days in Virginia history. While two years have passed the memory of that tragic day remains fresh. The tears, the anger, the sadness, the loss can return at a moment’s notice. Time has passed, the moment has not.
We remember where we were as the first reports of the tragedy began to break. Many of us remember calling loved ones to find out about friends and family who were at the school. And we remember, immediately following those first desperate hours, the emergence of the very best of Virginia.
Governor Tim Kaine, traveling to Asia, returned immediately without a moment wasted. Through his words and actions he led our Commonwealth with courage and character. Our law enforcement officials, facing a tragedy without historical precedent, served bravely and selflessly. Virginians prayed together, cried together, and mourned together. And two years later we continue to recover, together.
In the days and weeks after the tragedy Virginians forgot about old divisions, and united to make our Commonwealth safer. We made quick improvements in the mental health laws related to purchases of firearms, and the General Assembly passed further mental health improvements in the next session.
Two years later the tragedy of April 16th, 2007 remains with us. We continue to pray for all those impacted by the devastating events of that sad day. We continue to remember family members and friends who lost loved ones, or who had a loved one injured. And we continue to take strength from the courage and compassion shown by the Virginia Tech student body and community. They made all Virginians, “Hokies Forever.”
